Avery UPDATES

Most of Avery's updates and entries are written by her mother, Marissa.

Finally today we were able to hold her in our arms the entire day and night.  She loved it and really enjoyed being with us.  Avery was very swollen from not having dialysis.

They finally started to allow her to drink 3 oz. every 4 hours which was horrible because she would suck it down and scream for more.  To me, it was better not giving her any at all because she was teased with just a taste.

She is still in Pediatric ICU and her two nurses are WONDERFUL, they are very sweet and caring with her.

Today she was starting to look a little better.  She was sitting up in her crib but she was still very irritable and fussy.  She couldn't drink a bottle at all due to the medication she was on.

It was hard on us because she would cry when she saw me, she didn't understand why I couldn't pick her up (doctors orders).  She didn't know what was going on.  I can't stand to see my sweet baby like this.  She is always so happy and it hurts really bad to see that she is in this much discomfort and pain.

Avery's blood levels were so low that she had to get a blood transfusion on today.

They had to stop in the middle of the blood transfustion when they found out the name of the bacteria growing in her tummy and it was pseudomonas.  This is a very bad infection that attaches and grows on foreign objects.

Avery had to go back into surgery on tonight to have the dialysis catheter removed from her belly.

When the surgeon removed her catheter she found that the bacteria was already attached to the catheter and it also growing inside the tube as well.

It was bad.

The doctors got tests back and finally found that she has a very bad infection (peritonitus) in her belly.  The old catheter that was removed was starting to get infected.  The new catheter was inserted close to the same location of the old catheter.  Well the "bug" (organism) must have attached to her new catheter and traveled into her belly.

Today she was very irritable and in a lot of pain, she couldn't move.  Every noise disturbed her.  She was crying so hard that she couldn't breathe.  They thought she was having seizures so they admitted her in Pediatric ICU on so they can start stronger antibiotics through an IV and they wanted to do a spinal tap.

Thank you to all of our MANY family and friends who drove an hour to Galveston to see Avery and support Raul and me.  You all are such a blessing and your support really helps, this was the worst it has been for me since Avery was born.

I spoke with Avery's nurse, Jeanene, and she is afraid Avery may have gotten peritonitious.  She said Avery shouldn't still be in pain.  We took her temp and she had a fever of 101.5 and her dialysis fluid was very yellow and cloudy.  We of course brought her back up to UTMB immediately.  She was admitted and started IV pain medication and a strong dose of antibiotics.  Avery is still in a lot of pain and does not seem normal.  She has had peritonitous before and it seemed to be a lot better as soon as antibiotics has been given to her.
